Chapter 5 · PRAYERS OF THE ÆSIR

Baldur

The Shining One

Who He Is

Baldur is the god of light, beauty, joy, and peace. He is the son of Odin and Frigg, and he was the most beloved of all the gods—so radiant that light shone from him, so gentle that no harsh judgment ever fell from his lips. His death, brought about by Loki's cunning and a sprig of mistletoe, was the greatest tragedy of the Norse mythic cycle and a harbinger of Ragnarök.

But Baldur's story does not end in death. After Ragnarök, after the old world burns and the waters reclaim the land, Baldur returns—risen from Hel's domain to rule the new world that emerges. He is, in this way, a god of hope: the promise that even after the worst destruction, something beautiful survives.

To pray to Baldur is to reach for the light, even in darkness. It is to believe that joy is possible, that peace is worth pursuing, and that what has been lost can, in time, be restored.

Prayer 1: For Inner Peace

Baldur, Shining One, Light of Ásgarðr, your very presence was peace— the kind that settles into a room like sunlight settling into still water.

I need that stillness now. My mind is a storm I cannot quiet, my heart a fist I cannot unclench.

Lay your light over me, Baldur. Not to burn away what I feel, but to illuminate it— so I can see it clearly, name it, and let it pass.

Peace is not the absence of trouble. It is the presence of something stronger than trouble. Be that presence for me now.

Hail Baldur, the Bright.

Prayer 2: For Joy and Gratitude

Baldur, you reminded the gods what joy was. In your presence, they forgot their burdens— not because the burdens disappeared, but because joy is strong enough to stand beside them.

I have forgotten how to be glad. The weight of days has pressed it out of me, and I cannot remember the last time I laughed without effort or smiled without thinking about it.

Teach me again, Baldur. Open my eyes to the small bright things— the light on water, the warmth of a hand, the taste of bread when you are truly hungry.

Joy is not frivolity. It is the soul's evidence that it is still alive. Let me feel it again.

Hail Baldur, Lord of Joy.

Prayer 3: For Hope in Dark Times

Baldur, you died— the brightest among them, struck down— and the world went dark.

But you come back. After the fire, after the flood, after everything has fallen, you walk out of the shadows and the new world begins.

I am in my own dark time now, Baldur. It feels like the fire has already come and the flood is on its way.

Remind me of your return. Remind me that darkness is not permanent, that winter ends, that the worst chapter of a story is not the last chapter.

I hold onto hope today because you are the proof that hope is not foolish.

Hail Baldur, Promise of Renewal.

Prayer 4: For Healing from Emotional Wounds

Gentle Baldur, Unblemished One, no cruelty ever lived in you— and yet cruelty found you anyway.

I have been wounded— not in body, but in the places that bodies cannot protect. My trust, my peace, my sense of safety have been damaged by the actions of others.

Lay your light on these wounds, Baldur. Not to pretend they are not there, but to heal them honestly— slowly, gently, as a long winter gives way to the first true warmth of spring.

I do not need to forget what happened. I need to stop carrying it in every interaction, every thought, every flinch.

Help me heal, Baldur. I am ready.

Hail Baldur, the Gentle Healer.

Prayer 5: For Reconciliation

Baldur, in the new world after Ragnarök, old enemies lay down their grudges and sit together in the grass where Ásgarðr once stood.

I need that kind of peace between me and [name/situation]. The conflict has gone on too long. It has cost more than it is worth.

Help me find the courage to reach out— or the grace to receive the reaching. Let us lay down what separates us and see what can be rebuilt.

Not forgetting. Not pretending. But choosing peace because the alternative has proven hollow.

Hail Baldur, Light of Reconciliation.
